What We Do
The R Family Council is an inclusive and supportive group of Rutgers Families that serves as an advisory group to the Office of Parent and Family Engagement. They work to help families support their students and foster a positive and enduring connection to the university. The Council encourages interaction between family members and the University by supporting programs offered by the Office of Parent and Family Engagement and the Division of Student Affairs. The R Family Council is comprised of 30 – 35 families (one to two parents or family members per invitation). Council participants serve a two-year term. This group is selected through an application process during the winter.
The Primary Goals of the R Family Council include:
- Enhancing Communication – Keep parents informed about university policies, programs, and student support services.
- Providing Feedback – Offers a channel for parents to share concerns, suggestions, and feedback to the administration
- Supporting Student Success – Helps parents understand how to best support their children academically, socially, and emotionally.
- Encouraging Engagement – Organizes events, volunteer opportunities, and initiatives to foster parental involvement.
- Building Community – Connects parents with each other to create a supportive network.
Responsibilities Include:
- Make a commitment to volunteer for a two-year term to share our knowledge and expertise across a range of initiatives and programs that support the mission and the goals of the Rutgers Division of Student Affairs
- Attend two in-person meetings (virtual option available for out-of-state or international families) at the Rutgers New Brunswick campus and one virtual meeting
- Provide strategic input to senior administrators regarding issues of importance to parents and families
- Represent the R Family Council at events and other outreach efforts
- Maintain frequent contact with the Office of Parent and Family Engagement staff
