Is participating in NPFO required?
No, participation is not required. However, we recommend that every student have at least one family member or supporter participate in orientation to ensure you have all the information and resources you need to support your Scarlet Knight in their transition to Rutgers.
When is NPFO offered?
Each summer NPFO is offered beginning at the end of June through the beginning of August. Dates are announced and you may begin signing up on May 1.

How long is New Parent and Family Orientation?
The one-day program begins at 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM.
Does my student attend orientation with me?
No, students have their own two-day orientation program they should attend on their own.
How does Orientation work?
Rutgers NPFO will provide one day of programming for family members and supporters to receive the resources, information, and connections to make their student's transition successful.
What are the benefits of attending the in-person NPFO Program?
Scarlet Knight Family Members who register for our in-person NPFO program will be registered for a day packed full of engaging presentations, opportunities to meet and ask questions of current staff, parents, alumni, students, and a chance to experience the Rutgers campus.
Is there a virtual option for NPFO?
Yes, for those families with busy schedules or are unable to travel there are a number of two- hour virtual orientation sessions during the summer.
How much will the the NPFO program cost?
There is a $50 per person fee for our in-person orientation program. The fee helps to cover the cost of food, tours, and materials you receive during the program and the training and payment of student orientation leaders. The Virtual Orientation program is $20 per family.
Why is there a fee for NPFO?
The budget for programing through the Office of Parent and Family Engagement is self-support, which means no state or institutional funding is received. This fee is solely to subsidize the cost of NPFO.
Where can I park while I am attending NPFO?
There are specific lots available for parents and family members to park while attending NPFO. You will receive more information and a link to register your car when the final reminder is emailed to you one week prior to your orientation.
Can I cancel my registration for NPFO?
If you are not able to attend NPFO, and would like to receive a refund, please notify us one week from the program date, via phone 848-455-1865 or email ruparents@echo.rutgers.edu. After that we are not able to make any changes to our food and supply order for the session. If available, we can reschedule you for a different date.
Will I have the opportunity to talk to my student’s academic advisor?
During orientation, the academic advisors are involved in registration sessions with the students attending NSO. Families will not be permitted to attend these sessions as this is an important first step for your student’s academic independence.
Can I meet with a representative from Financial Aid while I am on campus?
Yes, representatives from One Stop will provide a general presentation which will address general questions and concerns. You may also visit One Stop to ask specific questions related to your student’s circumstances.
Where and when should I pick my student up from their program?
For two-day New Student Orientation programs, students will finish their program at 4:30 pm on the second day. We suggest that you reach out to your student to find out where they will be when their session is over to pick a meeting spot.
